在中国人的心目中，龙象徵着至高无上的权力，拥有无比崇高的地位。但在西方人眼中，龙却是邪恶的象徵，屠龙者是英雄，是人们崇拜的对象。一正一邪本无可厚非，毕竟东西文化差异使然，然而正因为此，很多中国人不敢理直气壮地承认龙是中国文化的象徵。更有意思的是，西方近几年却出现了很多可爱的龙的形象。在这种文化大背景下，赵启光教授的《天下之龙：东西方龙的比较研究》应运而生。
赵启光出生于书香世家，又在国外工作生活近三十年，正如钱文忠教授所说：“赵启光教授所秉承和具备的，是中国传统的豁然通达之情与西方科学的外在超越之思。”他对西方文化的熟稔，以及近水楼台考察的优势，使得这本东西方龙文化的比较研究，更加深入而具有说服力，这正是国内很多作者难以企及；而他深厚的中国传统文化根基，使得这本论着立足在了一个坚实的基础之上，令读者回味无穷。

赵启光生于北京，获中国社会科学院研究生院英美文学硕士学位，美国麻萨诸塞大学比较文学博士学位。现为美国卡尔顿学院终身教授，同时兼任同济大学特聘教授、清华大学客座研究员等。
他开创了美国卡尔顿学院中国语言文学部，一直从事汉语言文学、比较文学，以及道家哲学等的教授工作。近三十年来，他一直致力于传播中华文化，并成批地将美国学生带回国内交流学习，极大地促成了中美文化的双向交流。
其中文着作有《古道新理——赵启光话讲老子》、《老子的智慧》、《世路心程》、《客舟听雨》、《康拉德小说选》等；英文着作有《中西方龙的研究》（A Study of Dragon: East and West）、《无为无不为》（Do Nothing and Do Everything）等。

本书根据我在80年代末写的英文书A Study of Dragons,East and West（东西方龙之研究）译成中文，现又增加了一些内容。我在原书中强调传统西方龙的邪恶意义和中国人心目中龙的崇高位置。时至今日已经悠悠二十余年，两次龙年循环过去了，东西方龙的地位也发生了意想不到的变化。在这二十多年里，西方的文学和影视中出现了许多善良可爱的龙的形象，与此同时，许多中国人却开始担心龙在西方代表邪恶，从而不敢理直气壮地承认龙象徵中国。有感于此，2012年初龙年到来前夕我在《人民日报》海外版和中英文《环球时报》连续发表几篇文章谈这种含有讽刺意义的新变化。现将其中几篇重载于此与全书形成对照，一则为老龙壮壮声势，二则感慨时代变迁、人心不古乃一至于此。希腊哲学家赫拉克利特的名言“人不能两次踏进同一条河流”是说，河水川流不息，你下次再来时，上次的河流已经成了东逝之水。那幺我们也许可以说，龙在人们心目中变化无穷，所以人不能两次龙年看到同一条龙。——赵启光
