廖小林在鱼类生态基因组学方面，初步建立了高效快速提取鱼类基因组DNA的高盐方法，开发了30多种海淡水鱼类的微卫星DNA标记，开展了几种长江鱼类的群体遗传学研究，为我国经济或生态重要鱼类的种质资源评价与保护提供了技术手段与基础资料。在鱼类分子遗传学方面，通过主持973项目课题与国家自然科学基金面上项目等项目，参与开展了牙鲆抗病分子育种与半滑舌鳎分子性别控制技术研究，筛选到多个与牙鲆抗病性状、半滑舌鳎性别紧密连锁的分子标记，构建了半滑舌鳎第一个遗传连锁图谱，建立了半滑舌鳎快速可靠的遗传性别分子鉴定方法。先后主持了973项目课题、国家自然科学基金面上项目、山东省农业良种工程项目等多项研究任务，在国内外学术刊物上发表研究论文近50篇，其中第一作者论文8篇（SCI论文7篇），获得授权发明专利3项（第一发明人1项），作为主要参加人员获得省部级奖励6项。
