戴蒙出生于波士顿，父亲为一位医生，母亲为一位兼具语言学能力的音乐老师。 戴蒙毕业于Roxbury拉丁学校后，在1958年获得哈佛大学文学士学位，于1961年获得剑桥大学膜生物物理及生理学博士学位。1962年至1966年返回哈佛担任基础研究员，在1966年担任加州大学洛杉矶分校（UCLA）医学院的教授一职。在他二十余岁时，他同时研究纽几内亚的鸟类生态与演化行为，并多次探险纽几内亚与其周围的群岛。在他五十余岁时，戴蒙进行环境史的研究，并担任加州大学的地理与环境健康科学的教授。

戴蒙为一位闻名于结合人类学、生物学、语言学以及遗传学与历史的大众科学的写作者。
