于洛男爵的妻子阿特丽纳·斐希，出身于农家，出落得十分标緻。他们夫妇过了十二年幸福的生活。后来，于洛男爵放蕩起来，把妻子扔在一边。阿特丽纳的堂妹李斯贝蒂·斐希是个丑姑娘，四十多岁尚未出阁，心地善良的阿特丽纳把她从农村接到巴黎，让她学刺绣识字，老姑娘也立志要为自己挣一份家业。
一八三三年，贝蒂拯救了一个开煤气自杀的青年文赛斯拉·史丹卜克。他是一个从波兰逃到巴黎的政治犯。贝蒂把自己的积蓄拿出来供养他。有一次，贝蒂把一颗文赛斯拉刻的镶银印章给外甥女奥当斯看，并吐露出她的秘密。与此同时，奥当斯在古董店遇见了文赛斯拉。这对年轻人一见钟情，文赛斯拉便背着贝蒂偷偷出入于洛家。贝蒂见外甥女奥当斯抢走了她的爱人，妒性大发。
她暗中则下定决心，要对于洛一家施行报复……
